S4E35 - The Hosts of Daxmas Past

S3E25: Facets; S3E26: The Adversary; Season Wrap-up

Episode Notes

Facets: Nothing can go wrong with everyone embodying Dax's former hosts, right? Dax gives Quark an earjob just to make him be a woman. Kurzodo? Maybe this episode is more about Kurzon and Sisko's relationship? Yikes. Nog is starting on a great journey, and Rom is lovely. The benefits of a strong ensemble cast. Avery Brooks' "creepy voice". Trek episodes where familiar actors play different characters is always fun.

The Adversary: Ben gets a promotion! Captain is the highest non-flag rank in Starfleet. We see more of the Defiant. Another infiltration plot. It's weird to not hate Eddington in this episode but we're going with it. On the other hand, Eddington is the one character who does not get weird with aliens.

Rejected episode titles:

  • Quark Forcefem
  • Kurzodo
  • Fermat's Last Pop Culture Reference
  • Odo's Texture Pack
  • It all comes back to Dracula

S4E34 - All Vulcans are Bitches

S3E24: Shakaar

Episode Notes

It's still a provisional government?! A lot happens in this episode to move the Bajor plot forward. Disability and injury in storytelling. 20th century comparisons. Kai Winn is charismatic, unfortunately.

S4E33 - USS Hōkūleʻa

S3E22: Explorers; S3E23: Family Business

Episode Notes

Jude bucks for a promotion again (they all forgot he got one at the beginning of season 2).

Explorers: Sisko advances to "project sailboat in the garage" dad status. Oh yeah, Dax was a dad at one point. Bashir gets lovingly teased by roughly half the principal cast. What a great Bashir and O'Brien scene. Jake's career plans, and Jake's opinions of his dad. The question of maintaining lab cleanliness.

Family Business: Women earning profit? Time to go to Ferenginar and deal with Moogie. So many river names, so many runabouts blown up. Jake's matchmaking skills. Captain Dad. Ferengi are the anti-hobbits.

S4E32 - Cardassian Deep Throat

S3E20: Improbable Cause; S3E21: The Die is Cast

Episode Notes

Improbable Cause: Directed by Avery Brooks! It's weird how major diplomatic incidents frequently get explained away by "they're Romulan". [GENERIC CAVE SET]. This episode is like "Coming of Shadows" from DS9. Garak is so perfectly disinterested in Julius Caesar. Jude admits he doesn't hate Odo any more. The principles of not over-using a looming threat. You know Garak's not lying when he actually says he doesn't know.

The Die is Cast: That fucker Eddington. Honestly, the Dominion's response to this incident seems thoroughly justifiable under the rules of war. Garak and Odo share a unique exile bond. Is the comparison between Wolf 359 and this engagement apt? Sometimes badmirals never reappear.

We are joined once again by noted Wolf 359 historian Andy! Andy is a life long fan of Sci-fi in all of its forms and creator and co-writers of the Wolf 359 Project, an oral history of the Battle of Wolf 359. He also hosts his own podcast ‘The Great Derelict’ where he talks about anything and everything to do with Sci-Fi. S4E31 - Super Saiyan Avery Brooks

S3E19: Through the Looking Glass

Episode Notes

Mirror Kurzon was definitely into it. Maybe the reason the Mirror Universe is so stupid is because the blood goes down to your junk. Cross-dimensional STIs. Mirror Garak is a pathetic little meow-meow. Sisko is a good action commander. Mirror Universe episodes are a chaotic, horny delight.

S4E30 - O'Brien gets Harry Kimmed

S3E17: Visionary; S3E18: Distant Voices

Episode Notes

Visionary: O'Brien Suffers Level--Harry Kim. Klingons, Romulans, and weird radiation, oh my. Klingon spies. Romulans went down a different 4x tech tree. Jude makes a prediction about Morn. O'Brien is so good because he follows regulations and makes good decisions.

Distant Voices: Bashir is turning 30! Every Trek series needs a dream sequence working through trauma. The problems with age makeup.

S4E29 - Redwall-ass Prophecy

S3E15: Destiny; S3E16: Prophet Motive

Episode Notes

Destiny: We stuff each other in lockers. No vole fights. Sisko's struggles with the role of Emissary. The Stressed Cardassian, the Horny Cardassian, and the Angry Cardassian. We like Galora better than Lochley. Dax has been allll over.

O'Brien Suffers Level--propositioned in a Jeffries Tube.

Prophet Motive: Directed by Odo. Jude hates Umak. A revised Rules of Acquisition? Live troll handjobs on television. Jude mixes comedic metaphors. Derailed by the Emmys. We all need a Dax in our lives. The Wormhole Aliens heard about capitalism and decided "well, we need to fix that". And then they realized it would mean visitors, and said "well actually never mind."

S4E28 - This Gaslighting could have been an Email

S3E13 Life Support; S3E14 Heart of Stone

Episode Notes

Jude is Calvin's Dad.

Life Support:

Odo resolves any problem via incarceration, including friendships. Sisko continues to be Good Dad. The Ferengi misogyny is real bad, and the Nog plot is only redeemed by knowing what it is going to be set in contrast with. Bashir is stuck between a rock and a hard Kai.

Heart of Stone:

The Cave Set returns. Odo is suspicious of Nerodo shipping. Odo's wet fascist sisterwife. The start of a very important plotline, which only works because Sisko understands Ferengi so well. Vilix'pran! Maybe the A plot is there to give the B plot more air.

S4E27 - Past Oof

S3E11 and 12 Past Tense part 1 and 2

Episode Notes

Jude is not well during the first half of this episode so it's a little rough. Also, Jude and Justen have some Dune Thoughts. Worm.

Past Tense Part 1: This meeting could have been an email. 2024?? Chroniton plot armor. 2024 looks are just rancid 90s looks. Why is Dax so much better than Sisko and Bashir at committing identity fraud? How would YOU cope with getting thrown 350 years into the past? Some Captain chat. Some political chat about how ripped-from-reality this plot is.

Past Tense Part 2: Previously on BabPod, some timeywimey stuff. It's scarily appropriate that SF is the setting for this episode. Jude feels old because Ana and Justen don't know Airheads. Kira's not great at spycraft. We have lots of thoughts, and not just about millennials.

S4E26 - Lwaxana's Google Alerts

S3E9: Defiant; S3E10: Fascination

Episode Notes

Defiant: You know this is a utopia when the doctor can order vacations. Dax clearly thinks that Kira banged Riker. Because Dax also clearly banged Riker. You know something's wrong when someone is mean to O'Brien. Villainous Goatee! What happens if you put aluminum foil in the replicator? Kira being the A-plot main character is very pre-2001. Using the Maqis and the Bajoran rebellion as examples of morally grey terrorism is not ideal. Reading Enterprise logs must be sanity-wrecking.

Fascination: DS9 does a sex farce. Bashir has significant leeway to diagnose colleagues as "assholes". Lwaxana Troi may be the galaxy's worst seatmate, but it is pretty fun to see her making Odo uncomfortable. What ARE jumja sticks? Oh hey, Xanthi fever. Sisko knows something's wrong when people want to cancel dinner. Jake has rizz. Lwaxana's Google Alerts include Odo, Captain Picard, and sex festivals. On the other hand, the O'Briens' relationship plot feels really grounded and realistic.
