The Babbies

It's the Babbies!

It's the Babbies! The group takes a break to abuse poor Zathras and force them to award "prizes" in various categories as we look back on three seasons of Babylon 5.

S1E36 - Might As Well Jump

Episode(s) Discussed: Z’ha’dum

In which the question “how long can one of Jude’s summaries go?” is asked and answered as we discuss “Z’ha’dum”, featuring a lengthy debate about Sheridan’s love of warcrimes. We meet both his and his actor’s wife, and dive into the extremely shallow waters of the Shadows’ moral and political philosophy. Jude rants about the origin of telepaths, Justen expounds about 90s neoliberalism, and the gang talks about the toll that writing two seasons of TV in a row took on JMS.

S1E35 - It's G'Kar in a Box, Babe

“And The Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place” and “Shadow Dancing”

In which the crew have varied opinions regarding the merits of blue Centauri jello cubes. “The Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place” features historical context for hiding things in hollowed-out bibles (although not for unlabeled data crystals), Vir’s continuing bad luck in elevators, and some headcanons regarding the Narn language. In “Shadow Dancing,” we get some great Ivanova/Marcus content, the crew ponders why there are Earth tourists on B5 and how air miles work in the future, and we propose that the reason for all the waxed chests on B5 is that G’Kar is an extremely sexy trendsetter.

S1E34 - TWO Lasers

Episode(s) Discussed: S3E18 Walkabout S3E19 Grey 17 is Missing

In which Garibaldi fights a Gorn. “Walkabout” introduces a new Vorlon who may just be Mr. Sinister, gives the disheartening information that the American medical system persists to 2260, posits that Swedish Meatballs are the carcinization of food, and prompts an in-depth discussion about Foundationalism’s relationship to the concept of “walkabout” and Australian aboriginal people. In “Grey 17 is Missing”, we are sorely disappointed that a great Marcus plot is paired with a godawful Garibaldi plot, that Robert Englund’s physical acting abilities are sorely underused here, and that Franklin is bad enough at computer security that he doesn’t even put his secret files in the “porn” folder.

Our Last, Best Hope for AFC Richmond

LOTS OF TED LASSO SPOILERS

Ana finally succumbed to peer pressure and binge watched... then binge rewatched... Ted Lasso and sent up the Babpod Signal to talk about it. Scott Paladin joins the regular crew to discuss our favorite parts of the show, the ways in which it manipulates tropes and viewer expectations, and our predictions for the rest of Season 2. For listeners who haven't watched the show, this episode is officially All Spoilers No Warnings, so you may want to skip this recording if you don't want to be spoiled. So much so that Scott guest-edited the episode, as Aaron had not watched the show at the time of recording!

Scott can be found on twitter @scottpaladin and online at scottpaladin.com, as cohost on the Monster Mechanics Podcast @monstermpod and monsterpod.org, and as writer/director/editor on the Breathing Space, Fading Frontier audio drama @BreathingXSpacebreathingspace.lawofnames.com.

ISN Exclusive: Catherynne Valente talks Mass Effect

In an ISN/IPM exclusive, friend of the show and multiple award-winning SFF author Cat Valente returns! In her previous appearance we briefly discussed how the video game epic Mass Effect liberally borrows from Babylon 5, and so when the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect dropped we knew we had to have her back to dive deeper into the canon that she has actually significantly contributed to.

In her previous appearance we briefly discussed how the video game epic Mass Effect liberally borrows from Babylon 5, and so when the Legendary Edition of Mass Effect dropped we knew we had to have her back to dive deeper into the canon that she has actually significantly contributed to.

We discuss Cat's books, our approach to the games, and why Garrus fits a friend-shaped hole in our lives. Oh, and also how Picard is literally just Mass Effect.

S1E33 - Podcast Without End

Episode(s) Discussed: S3E16-17 War Without End

In which the rate of Justen Headphones Moments is drastically reduced. This is it. The big one. This is PODCAST WITHOUT END. In the first half of War Without End, we discuss the principle of Occam’s Razor as applied to “time travel or deepfake”, question what Sinclair sees in Garibaldi, and threaten to call pest control for an infestation of Zathrii. In the back half, we give an important PSA about talking about time travel with your romantic partner(s), rename octopi as “Terran Octo-Dick Fish”, and realize that Marcus operates on D&D player logic and rolls 20s. More seriously, we discuss the role of this episode in the broader narrative arc of the show and as a send-off for both Sinclair and O’Hare, what makes a time travel episode work, and moments of transition vs moments of revelation.

S1E32 - What Can I Get For This Lipstick Tube of Diamonds?

Episode(s) discussed: S3E15 Interludes and Examinations

In which we learn that Franklin might not have time to sleep but absolutely has time to wax his chest. “Interludes and Examinations” features Ivanova dooming the station via opening monologue, Kosh force choking Sheridan after being called on his cryptic bullshit, Londo having enough big tentacle energy to call out Morden, and the audience finally seeing that the Shadows are actually menacing and will absolutely shank you in a hallway. We also start a more serious deep dive into Franklin’s addiction plotline, and the cast stans Dr. Hobbs, the only person thus far willing to stand up to both Franklin and Garibaldi.

S1E31 - Do Not Thump the Book

Episode(s) Discussed: S3E14 Ship of Tears

In which the cast are joined by Scott Paladin for even more discussion of Centauri dicks, and also Starfuries. “Ship of Tears” features Fox News, err, ISN, returning to the air, G’Kar’s personal Gethsemane moment, and the cast noticing the parallels between Bester and Magneto. In the back half of the episode, Justen and Scott throw hands over the merits of the Mark 2 (“Thunderbolt”) Starfury, Scott teaches us everything we ever wanted to know about anatomy (including front butts), and we pose what may be the most important question of the season: If you’re getting it on with a Vorlon, do you see whatever genitalia you think are the most perfect?

Scott can be found on twitter @scottpaladin and online at scottpaladin.com, as cohost on the Monster Mechanics Podcast @monstermpod and monsterpod.org, and as writer/director/editor on the Breathing Space, Fading Frontier audio drama @BreathingXSpacebreathingspace.lawofnames.com.
