S4E50 - Klingon Sisko can Get It

S05E01: Apocalypse Rising; S05E02: The Ship

Episode Notes

We begin the 5th season of Deep Space 9 with the 50th episode of PodSpace9! Buckle up, folks.

Apocalypse Rising: HEIST! Sad formerly goo boy. The problem with prototypes. Oh good more questionable science. Dukat just wants a selfie. Kira is very pregnant. One of the greatest 4th wall breaking jokes in Star Trek, or possibly TV, history. Sisko really digs being a Klingon. Weapons vs. Worf's lying ability. Sometimes you need a room full of Klingons with guns. Gowron knows many layers of battle.

The Ship: Another war episode, but quite different from the fun one last time. This may be the last Trek episode about The Cold War. The cast devolves into their worst selves. Sisko lays out DS9's themes for the next three seasons. The Dominion only sees zero-sum games. If you get a nickname, ya dead.

S4E49 - Changeling Nipples

S4E26: Broken Link

Episode Notes

Puberty or Menopause? Weird Gowron voicemails. Break out the family van, it's time to take Odo to the doctor. Looks like it's a psychosomatic illness, time for a trial? Garak gets Worfed. Odo giblets. Lots of things in this episode are more surprising than Gowron being a changeling. All the terrible things that come with becoming a solid. Text, subtext, and ships.

S4E48 - Jumpsuit Savior

S4E24: The Quickening; S4E25: Body Parts

Episode Notes

CW: Pandemic/Bioweapon

The Quickening: The most annoying Quark has been, and the most angry Worf has been, so far. Kira, Bashir, and Dax road trip time! Bashir grapples with Big Emotions.

Body Parts: Miles Suffers (parental). Body Swap plot, but a brand new version--and the most Star Trek gender reveal party ever. What a great way to hide Nana Visitor's pregnancy. Miles/Kira/Keiko polycule? The other plot is... different. Of course Ferengi have annual insurance physicals. BRUNT, FCA. Garak is definitely not an assassin. Quark actually has friends.

S4E47 - No "Eddington was right" T-shirts

S4E22: For the Cause; S4E23: To the Death

Episode Notes

Instead of a hard-hitting question we dive into food porn for a bit.

For the Cause: What are industrial replicators? Uh oh, Ben. This is point where the Maquis jump the shark. Cardassian saunas. Where's the episode where Sisko's security clearance is reviewed? Garak makes Bashir jealous. Jude's theory of bad hairlines.

To the Death: Haven't talked about Jem'Hadar recently... Wait, I know that voice! The Vorta offer to make Sisko the absolute ruler of the Federation. Star gates? We aren't covering THAT show yet. Jem'Hadar biology. Jem'Hadar slayer axe. A nice little O'Brien-Dax scene.

Rejected episode titles: This episode is a sandwich Maquis Porch Pirates Starfleet Godwin's Law There's no crying in springball Used Car Salesman of the Dominion Who doesn't love an ancient portal

S4E46 - Peanut Butter and Chocolate Depression

S4E18: Rules of Engagement S4E19: Hard Time

Episode Notes

CW: Self-Harm

Rules of Engagement: Watch this episode, it's a really good Star Trek Legal Drama. The Klingons want to extradite Worf for... murder? What is Worf's holosuite history? Good Sisko Dad moment. The lawyer may be a piece of shit but he's not questioning the sentience of an obviously sentient being. Odo says ACAB.

Hard Time: O'Brien Suffers level: SO MUCH. Prison is only punishment.

S4E45 - A is for Author Insert

S4E20: Shattered Mirror; S4E21: The Muse

Episode Notes

As a holiday treat to ourselves, we are going a bit out of order and temporarily skipping two warcrimes (airhorn) episodes. We'll come back, don't worry!

Shattered Mirror: Time for some mirror universe shenanigans! Mom?! Our own Defiant, but made out of spare Pepsi cans and chewing gum. Jude reminds us, again, of one fo his kinks. Jake tries a Parent Trap. Mirror Worf is worst Worf (appreciative). One of the most feral episodes yet. Odo tries to be nice. The Defiant is one of the clearest chunks of backstory for Sisko.

The Muse: Lwaxana Troi! Pregnant Lwaxana Troi! Demented gender politics. One of the nicest Odo moments. They didn't want to do a horny plot with Jake, so the A plot could have been much better.

Rejected Episode Titles:

  • Weird Fuckable Popcorn Buckets
  • Temu Defiant
  • This May Awaken Something

S4E44 - Not Our Orange Hypercapitalist Gremlins

S04E16: Bar Association

Episode Notes

STRIKE! Quark's bar workers unionize. Unfortunately, this is against Ferengi law, and also anathema to Cop Odo. Maybe that's why they love each other so much. Where did Rom get hold of a copy of Marx translated into Ferengi? Jude gets frustrated with the relentless flirting between Dax and Worf. Odo has been sitting on that datapadd for SO long (and how are Enterprise security reports not classified to some degree?). Jude was physically wounded by this episode. What is the writer-room origin of the Ferengi? The immeasurable depths of Quark. Labor in the 24th century.

For this episode we were delighted to be joined by Aaron (Zathras)'s friend Sabiha Basrai! Sabiha Basrai is a community organizer, educator, and researcher. You can find her work at Basrai.org. She is also co-owner of the worker-owned, unionized shop Design Action Collective.

S4E43 - Stephen Franklin Award for Dubious Medical Ethics

S4E15: Sons of Mogh; S4E17: Excession (we're coming back to Bar Association)

Episode Notes

Some very timely holiday content.

Sons of Mogh: Time for a ritual killing! Worf and Dax. Worf was cucking Ricker. Dax is basically a Klingon for the purposes of this show. Murdering family members is a bridge too far. Klingon Operation would be really complicated. The triumphant return of the warcrimes airhorn. Jude does not like the end of this episode.

Excession: Kira always has to tell people about the occupation. Also she's not a particularly great artist. Imagine if a pope got spat out of the Bermuda triangle... We're not a huge fan of the b-plot; it stinks of 90s.

S4E42 - Old Man Yaoi

S4E13: Crossfire S4E14: Return to Grace

Episode Notes

We're all 90s kids.

Crossfire: Worf and Odo bond over being neurodivergent and cops. Odo is stuffed into the third wheel. Quark is a good dude, in his own way--and possibly the only character that recognizes that Odo has actual emotions. Jude has thoughts about the cuck chair. Major Kira likes Bland Powerful Hot Boys, and Jude curls a monkey's paw.

Return to Grace: Time for another Ducat/Kira episode! Klingons refusing to fight you is deeply embarrassing. Some diversions into mechanical keyboard jokes. Justen makes a very complicated history joke. Damar is introduced.

Crossfire!

S4E41 - Flock of Goop Seagulls

S4E11: Home Front S4E12: Paradise Lost

Episode Notes

We recorded this before the election. Sorry.

Jude gets some managerial advice.

Home Front: At least there's another Dad in this. Cadet Nog! Sabotage! Babylon 5 I Know That Face! "Ancient Klingons slew our gods a millennia ago." Nog is part of the Sisko family now.

Paradise Lost: Planetary Emergency! ...what is Red Squad? Lots of stuff happens here. Don't use cadets for a false flag operation, they have zero opsec. This episode represents the death of TNG's idyllic isolationism. The philosophy of Badmirals.
