S4E7 - Tonal Inconsistency

S1E13: The Storyteller; S1E14: Progress; S1E15: If Wishes Were Horses

Episode Notes

The Storyteller: Get in the minivan, Bashir! Horny teens should not be in charge of negotiations. O No My Bukkit. DS9 learned important lessons from TNG in terms of how to treat teenage characters--specifically, let them be cringe and celebrate it. Ferengi kinks. Justen strays into blasphemy. O'Brien Suffers Level: Dal'Rok

Progress: Let's talk about eminent domain. What the hell do self-sealing stem bolts do? Invisible seaming techniques. The long-term payoffs of this episode should have been better than they were. Jake gets a lesson in profit. Kira gets a little radicalized.

If Wishes Were Horses: Turns out that O'Brien CAN tell a good story. Bashir's fantasy is hella problematic, because we all know he's a bottom. Random space phenomenon that appears once and never returns, yaaaay. O'Brien Suffers Level: Rumplestiltskin?

Also: Baseball.

S4E6 - Morn should keep his big mouth shut

S1E12: Vortex; S1E13: Battle Lines

Episode Notes

Vortex: A... changeling? Odo--authoritarian, utilitarian, or just childfree? Good old ass-forehead trek aliens. Klingon shift! Jude trips over the plot from season 4-7.

Battle Lines: Kira's "secret" Cardassian file. Artificial purgatories are kinda shitty. The procedural plot is REAL BAD, the plot-plot is kinda hard to watch. Killing off the space-pope after two appearances?

O'Brien Suffers level: Ochre Runabout destruction count: 1

DIE wrap-up with Kieron Gillen

It was all for you.

DIE Wrap-up with Kieron Gillen

Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic creator with his 2006’s Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. Jamie and he formed into a gestalt monster that rampaged against the next fifteen years of comics, culminating with critical and smash hit the Wicked + the Divine.

When not with Jamie, he has co-created books such as DIE, The Ludocrats, Once & Future, Three, Uber and more. When not making his own worlds, he has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Uncanny X-men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra).

In a previous life he was an award winning pop-culture critic and journalist, and co-founder of Rock Paper Shotgun.

The best way to keep up to date with what he’s doing is his newsletter. He hates writing about himself in the third person, yet somehow he perseveres.

S3E10 - The Secret Third Thing

Issue 19: Boss Fight; Issue 20: Open Table

Episode Notes

Boss Fight: The group opens up. Also the characters open up. The context of people's lived experiences informs the media they make. Justen and Ana force Jude onto a soapbox.

Open Table: Explain the fucking backstory. Chuck's heroic sacrifice is almost enough. The merits of a good ending. It's clear that Kieron Gillen knows modern games.

S4E5 - The Emily Post of Starfleet

DS9 S1 E10: Move Along Home; DS9 S1 E11: The Nagus

Episode Notes

Spoiler warning: Headphones moment from 46:10 to 47:53, and from 1:00:21 to 1:00:55

Move Along Home: Game time! Also, yes, Nog should probably not be teaching sex ed to a humon. What Trek character would be a good sex educator? Quark makes Odo blow on the dice, the horniest thing we've seen so far. Klon Peags? Dax hits her stride. Does Starfleet Academy turn you into a lunatic?

The Nagus: Porny Giggles. Ferengi corpse NFTs. Side note: how were NFTs not a Ferengi b-plot? O'Brien Suffers level 5.5. Jake is teaching Nog to read? heart-eyes. Ferengi culture is built on middle managers... They should be gross, but they escape it by being ridiculous.

S3E9 - These are actually orbs

Issue 17: Total Party Kill; Issue 18: Lines and Veils

Episode Notes

TPK: The funniest possible Lovecraft explanation--and the only master who appears to be aware of his outside self. Personal horror is to evoke interesting responses, not traumatize the audience. BabPod lore!

Lines and Veils: Wow did Sol get screwed. The Grandmaster gives Mysterio vibes. The d20's origin mirrors the Fair Gold. Different grades of disaster queers.

S4E4 - Kira-Sisko Bureaucratic Tag-Team

S1E08 Dax; S1E09 The Passenger

Episode Notes

Jude would take a bad Trek theme over Picard's theme, but hates ENT. There's some time travel in this episode because we had to re-record it nearly a season later.

Dax: Dax and... Bashir? are in charge of Engineering? How wide is the Trill definition of "you"? Odo works better as a private detective than as an officer of the "law". Bashir is just immature, not full fedora. Is Garak a power bottom? Maybe, but Julian is not a top. Imagine being 200 and being around a hyperactive puppy dog 20 year old. The Dax trans narrative was not explicitly intended but it's amazing how directly it hit the mark. O'Brien Suffers level: Raktajino.

The Passenger: Odo, you must take this intern. No one could have seen this twist. This is a pretty beige episode. It seems too early in a series to do the "this character is acting out of character" trope.

We are joined by Velvet Dragon! Velvet is a trans lesbian and literal actual dragon. Find her on twitter and bluesky @VelvetTheDragon and on the Clever Corvids Podcasting Network.

S3E8 - Well in real life, a dragon...

Issue 15: PVP; Issue 16: THAC0

Episode Notes

Justen tells a Games Workshop story.

PVP: Interesting choices. Silmarillion reference. No one noticed that Sol got bamboozled. Sol would have loved Nobilis. Vampire might have fixed a lot of this group's issues. Sorry Grant. RIP Dour.

THAC0: We're on a boat! Howard Phillip Lovecraft is here. Jude would very much like Gygax not to make an appearance. Call of Cthulhu is not the kind of game where you get attached to your character. Sooner or later we're all spaces.

S4E3 - Correct Horse Battery Staple

S01E05: Babel; S01E06: Captive Pursuit; S01E07: Q-Less

Episode Notes

Babel: O'Brien Must Suffer level Orange. Ominous Blinking Device time! Jude had severe empathy-pain for O'Brien. Sisko knows that Kira will always blame Cardassians first. Quark arguing he's an essential service is so 2023. It's very strange to have a Star Trek show that has currency.

Captive Pursuit: Oh the 1990s, when being a sexual predator was a fun quirky character flaw and not a straight up bad thing... The Worst Predators make an appearance. The Ferengi are a "complex species", aka kinda gross. Odo gets Worfed a few times. The Bucket! It's a Good O'Brien episode.

Q-Less: O'Brien Must Suffer again. Oh look, two of Picard's exes in one episode, must be sweeps week. Q is more fun when he's trying to do something interesting, rather than just getting back with HIS ex. You get real real bored when you're a god. Sisko is the most straight (but not narrow) captain. Bashir didn't show up to the game session.

S3E7 - Simulationist Horseshit

Issue 13: Little Wars, Issue 14: Dual Wield

Little Wars: 20+20. Complicated verb tenses. The origins of the Fair. H.G. Wells is a Prick. The Masters of DIE. Dual Wield: If your kids grew up any time after the 1990s and get Jumanji'd, it's not your fault. According to tiktok dice are a little easier to make than this. If a Protagonist's mom is Bad News, what do you do?
