S4E42 - Old Man Yaoi

S4E41 - Flock of Goop Seagulls

S4E11: Home Front S4E12: Paradise Lost

Episode Notes

We recorded this before the election. Sorry.

Jude gets some managerial advice.

Home Front: At least there's another Dad in this. Cadet Nog! Sabotage! Babylon 5 I Know That Face! "Ancient Klingons slew our gods a millennia ago." Nog is part of the Sisko family now.

Paradise Lost: Planetary Emergency! ...what is Red Squad? Lots of stuff happens here. Don't use cadets for a false flag operation, they have zero opsec. This episode represents the death of TNG's idyllic isolationism. The philosophy of Badmirals.

Alternative titles: The Warmup Noogie Never meet your hero's... parents Ferengi-New Orleans Fusion Cuisine Evil Troll O'Brien

S4E40 - Klingons shop at Vallco

S4E10: Sword of Kahless; S4E11: Our Man Bashir

Episode Notes

Sword of Kahless: The only evil telepaths in Star Trek. Cursed or totemic? More Klingon lore and the central conflict of Worf than we've really ever previously gotten. Yeet that artifact into space.

Our Man Bashir: This gets pretty unhinged, you've been warned. Garak's introduction to the Bond Franchise. Bond Girl Kira? Justen rants about Baccarat. The episode that launched a thousand ships. It's great to see Siddig be something other than Doctor Dweeb. Are holonovels this century's indie game scene?

S4E39 - Submarine Edging

S4E07: Starship Down; S4E08: Little Green Men

Episode Notes

Jude gets busted down to acting ensign due to an HR error.

Starship Down: Justen goes feral. The Ferengi are like a bad cell phone company. Sloppy-style concussy. Worf learns a management lesson from O'Brien, and pulls a TNG move. Quark and Hanok are great, and it's nice to see Quark succeeding.

Little Green Men: Klingon and Ferengi chew toys. Quark leaves MORN in charge of the bar. 1947 America is not the best time to bloop into existence... nukes blocking the universal translators??? Odo stowed away to bust and/or be with his boyfriend. TOS levels of camp.

Our guest tonight is James! James is a former Floridian who ran off to the wilds of Australia to do exciting cattle and sheep science for the Australian government. His work combines statistics and biochemistry to better understand how we can recycle food waste and crop leftovers as food for livestock, and is part of the team behind the CLEM decision support software for Australian ranchers. His hobbies include knitting, reading lots of fanfic, and being a huge nerd.

You may have noticed the trailer before the main show. Jude's new Actual Play is already out and you can start listening to it now! S4E38 - Definitely Not Boushh

S4E05: Indiscretion S4E06: Rejoined

Episode Notes

Indiscretion: A bottle episode with Dukat and Kira? Hilarity ensues. Dukat drops the mask a bit. Kira is surprised by well-read Dukat, and has to deal with Cardassians as something other than the oppressor. Foreign-object-in-butt jokes are funny. The... Breen? Sisko biffs it. Dax channels Curzon for a bit.

Rejoined: Jadzia has never let Dax's baggage interfere in her job, right? right? Okay, how many gay awakenings came from this episode. The Ferengi apparently don't have close-up magic? Non-sex-related ear stuff. Worf is the anti-vibes and we love him for that.

S4E37 - Wormhole Prolapse

S4E03: The Visitor; S4E04: Hippocratic Oath

Episode Notes

The Visitor: In which we traumatize Jude. Captain Dad is the best even when temporally displaced. What else did this writer do? Oh, In the Pale Moonlight. Uh oh. The one mistake they made is getting Alexander Siddig's aging completely wrong. Some tech Trek gets right, some it gets hilariously wrong.

Hippocratic Oath: O'Brien/Bashir besties. Ketrecel White! Cop Worf does not gel with Wet PI Odo. A lot of characters don't feel right in this episode.

S4E36 - "Louk, a jeek CHIM-ta law"

S4E01-02: The Way of the Warrior

Episode Notes

Be ready for the longest summary in the history of the podcast...

Jude gets a promotion! The Galaxy Class is the Worf of the Federation ships. Klingon Armadas are disruptive. Worf is also disruptive. Odo shows his affection by spying on you. Certainly nothing could go wrong with a Klingon preemptive strike... Clearly they added Worf to the cast to add a terrible father to the mix. DS9's got guns! Justen makes a comparison that hurts Jude's soul.

S4E35 - The Hosts of Daxmas Past

S3E25: Facets; S3E26: The Adversary; Season Wrap-up

Episode Notes

Facets: Nothing can go wrong with everyone embodying Dax's former hosts, right? Dax gives Quark an earjob just to make him be a woman. Kurzodo? Maybe this episode is more about Kurzon and Sisko's relationship? Yikes. Nog is starting on a great journey, and Rom is lovely. The benefits of a strong ensemble cast. Avery Brooks' "creepy voice". Trek episodes where familiar actors play different characters is always fun.

The Adversary: Ben gets a promotion! Captain is the highest non-flag rank in Starfleet. We see more of the Defiant. Another infiltration plot. It's weird to not hate Eddington in this episode but we're going with it. On the other hand, Eddington is the one character who does not get weird with aliens.

Rejected episode titles:

  • Quark Forcefem
  • Kurzodo
  • Fermat's Last Pop Culture Reference
  • Odo's Texture Pack
  • It all comes back to Dracula

S4E34 - All Vulcans are Bitches

S3E24: Shakaar

Episode Notes

It's still a provisional government?! A lot happens in this episode to move the Bajor plot forward. Disability and injury in storytelling. 20th century comparisons. Kai Winn is charismatic, unfortunately.

S4E33 - USS Hōkūleʻa

S3E22: Explorers; S3E23: Family Business

Episode Notes

Jude bucks for a promotion again (they all forgot he got one at the beginning of season 2).

Explorers: Sisko advances to "project sailboat in the garage" dad status. Oh yeah, Dax was a dad at one point. Bashir gets lovingly teased by roughly half the principal cast. What a great Bashir and O'Brien scene. Jake's career plans, and Jake's opinions of his dad. The question of maintaining lab cleanliness.

Family Business: Women earning profit? Time to go to Ferenginar and deal with Moogie. So many river names, so many runabouts blown up. Jake's matchmaking skills. Captain Dad. Ferengi are the anti-hobbits.

S4E32 - Cardassian Deep Throat

S3E20: Improbable Cause; S3E21: The Die is Cast

Episode Notes

Improbable Cause: Directed by Avery Brooks! It's weird how major diplomatic incidents frequently get explained away by "they're Romulan". [GENERIC CAVE SET]. This episode is like "Coming of Shadows" from DS9. Garak is so perfectly disinterested in Julius Caesar. Jude admits he doesn't hate Odo any more. The principles of not over-using a looming threat. You know Garak's not lying when he actually says he doesn't know.

The Die is Cast: That fucker Eddington. Honestly, the Dominion's response to this incident seems thoroughly justifiable under the rules of war. Garak and Odo share a unique exile bond. Is the comparison between Wolf 359 and this engagement apt? Sometimes badmirals never reappear.

We are joined once again by noted Wolf 359 historian Andy! Andy is a life long fan of Sci-fi in all of its forms and creator and co-writers of the Wolf 359 Project, an oral history of the Battle of Wolf 359. He also hosts his own podcast ‘The Great Derelict’ where he talks about anything and everything to do with Sci-Fi.
