S1E58 - Double-Spoo Quarter Pounder with Flarn

CW: discussion around the subject of the common content warning of "eye stuff", which in and of itself could be a challenge for folks. Episodes discussed: "Meditations on the Abyss" and "Darkness Ascending"

Meditations on the Abyss, in which Jude barely contains his snark over the Lennier plotline, we discuss the logistics of 23rd century fast food localization, we realize that Vir started with regicide and worked his way down to vandalism, and intercultural cuckolding is argued about at length. So many meme references.

Darkness Ascending, where we quarantine the Garibaldi plot, there's a disagreement over exactly what happens behind the curtains in G'Kar's residence, Justen drops an exceedingly spicy take and Jude immediately one-ups them, we dunk on Jude for no longer hating Franklin, and then we realize that G'Kar is the first person on the show to treat Lyta like a person. Horniest b5 episode?

S1E57 - Walter Koenig is Bae

We're joined by David Gordon Buresh to talk about one of the standout episodes of Season 5, "The Corps is Mother, the Corps is Father"

After some reminiscing about growing up in similar frozen tv deserts...

Jude has a very short episode summary (LIAR), we learn what a PsyCorps internship looks like (spoiler: be warned), what a PsyCorps procedural would look like (yikes), and Bester is surprisingly not horrible. We give Walter Koenig a generous helping of our love for his consistently stellar portrayal of the best human antagonist of the entire show. Jude also claims to be an expert on bad wigs, briefly.

WHAT IS IN A PAK'MA'RA's HUMP? Wait, I'm sorry I asked.

David Gordon Buresh is a journalist, activist, author, and creative consultant with a lifelong love of gaming, science fiction, and storytelling. Located in New England, he has written and consulted for several games and journalism outlets. He is most famous for his Dave of the Five Rings blog on Cardboard Republic, a monthly blog coverring the popular card game and setting Legend of the Five Rings. Presently, he has taken a sabbatical from games journalism to further his education in political science, with a focus on indigenous rights. He can be found on Twitter at @SndWurks, and would like to remind you to support indigenous causes and to decolonize your media as the first step to decolonizing your mind. #LandBack #DefendICWA #TheFutureIsDecolonized

S1E56 - Narns don't do buttons

CW: discussion of alcoholism Phoenix Rising; The Jagged Edge

CW: discussion of alcoholism

In which the gang discusses the abruptly truncated telepath storyline (and a fun tongue twister), Bester implanting Asimov's Laws in Garibaldi, JMS writing himself into a corner and then painting a door to escape, the utility of a bucket of wrenches, comparisons are made between Lochley and Bester, and we point out repeatedly that the only nice thing to ever happen to Lyta was that Zach brought her a pizza once. After a brief diversion into discussing the new JMS comic that we're not going to read, we cringe over Afterburner brand whiskey (that's gotta be a mach 2 hangover), Jude continues to ship Franklibaldi, the lack of google reverse image search is posed as a challenge, and wait... is G'Kar getting royalties? JMS has evolved to the point where he's inserting pre-buttals into the text of the show.

Did we mention that watching Bester taunt Garibaldi is super fun?

S1E55 - The only email that should have been a meeting

Episodes discussed: In the Kingdom of the Blind; A Tragedy of Telepaths

Genre-aware Centauri architects, a Doctor Who crossover?, G'Kar and Londo doing NOTHING to dissuade the shippers, Jude yells at John Sheridan for a while. The story challenges of making a surprise season 5 are discussed at length.

S1E54 - Zooty Zoot Zoot!

CW GENOCIDE, and also a detailed discussion of a sex scene. Skip from 6:00 to 56:45 to skip Secrets of the Soul. Episodes discussed: Secrets of the Soul; Day of the Dead

CW GENOCIDE, and also a detailed discussion of a sex scene. Skip from 6:00 to 56:45 to skip Secrets of the Soul.

We're joined by Richard Kreutz-Landry @rkreutzlandry! Lightbulb tweetstorm here.

Descent into Midnight: @DIMrpg

Secrets of the Soul: In which we discuss tentacle-to-glowing-ball ratios, telepath power creep, nurses in adverse working conditions (pak'ma'ra and telekinetic), telepath ORGIES and the least sexy sexposition ever, and some very questionable infosec policies. And then Ana murders Jude. And then they talk about the sex scene some more. Zathras suffered.

A dramatic revelation about the director ensues.

Day of the Dead:

Written by Neil Gaiman?!? Jude agrees with Lochley, exactly once. G'Kar is rendered temporarily homeless by magical realism. For that matter, everyone gets visited by ghosts from their past. A crispy critter comes back to visit, making exactly zero people happy--Morden is upgraded from low-rent John Travolta to evil John Mulaney. Richard comes up with the dead-ex Ghostbusters corollary. Jude gets quite angry about the "humor". Much discussion of what could have been done with the Reebo and Zooty airtime instead. Jude politely requests "G'Kar/Picard on Risa" fics.

Zooty zoot zoot!

S1E53 - No Sugar Tonight

Episodes discussed: Learning Curve; Strained Relations

In which Jude has strong opinions about seated meditation, the implications of stuffing 5 years of plot into 4 years and ending up with less-than-enlightened centrism and n*zis, vigilante justice by way of diplomatic immunity, real-live free-range criminals as training dummies, and the problems implicit in hiring your ex to captain the space station you currently use as your seat of power for an interstellar alliance. Bester returns to his favorite corpsicle mall for fresh telepaths, Garibaldi exudes more sleaze-oil than the annual production of OPEC, and we ask an important question: does JMS actually want us to like Lochley?

Also, so much coffee talk.

S1E52 - B5: Down Below Decks!

Episodes discussed: "The Paragon of Animals" and "A View from the Gallery"

What do Hamlet, Animal Crackers, The West Wing, and the best Star Trek series (don't @ justen) have in common? This week's BabPod episode!

In "The Paragon of Animals" we have principles, war crimes, telepaths, and Garibaldi owning up to his disreputability, while in "A View from the Gallery" Jude dunks on SOMEONE for not knowing how to pronounce Ares, Justen has some x-wing/starfury thirst, and Ana defends Claudia Christian's Honor.

S1E51 - Into The Wilderness

Episodes discussed: "No Compromises" and "The Long Night of Londo Mollari"

In which we change up our intro and discuss oaths of office. In "No Compromises," we trade out a fiery brunette and a British man for the budget versions of each, and talk about how not to introduce a new character. Ana also immolates a man alive with a burn. In "The Long Night of Londo Mollari," we discuss what happens when your tarot deck starts bleeding jelly, the sci-fi trope of people playing other characters, and the ergonomics of minbari beds.
