S2E41 - Faraday Cage Match

S4E15: Q&A S4E16: Blunt

Justen describes, at length, a single player board game. There's probably at least 10% Person of Interest content in this episode, but no guarantees.

Q&A: Siri, MMA, and morgues. Claire returns. The stable of characters in PoI is huuuge. Any time Harold's computer gets stolen, we assume it's on purpose, like John getting into a garbage truck. Justen knows a surprising amount about MMA law. Jude brings in the OC, to Zathras' chagrin.

Blunt: Can't believe they didn't save this for Episode 20. We apparently stan a devious girl-criminal. If anyone's eligible for MMJ it's Harold. John has big cop energy. Zathras merges the timelines.

S2E40 - Monsters love small towns

S4E13: MIA S4E14: Guilty

The gang reconvenes after an extended recording hiatus (it shows...), discusses the weather, and then...

MIA: This is a d&d plotline. Just a reminder--torture does not work. Ana goes on a rant about New York. The Californians counter with a nuanced discussion of west coast cartography. Tweet the show with your opinions about geography, please, Zathras begs you. The slimmed-down team feels like season 1 again a bit. We like Dani and wonder if she was possibly a Shaw replacement. Some weird cyberpunk experiments that don't go anywhere. the Reese/root team-up is fascinatingly deadly.

Guilty: Evil 5G that gives you headaches? Fusco, zero to hero. Too much info, Jude. Also, Zoe! It may not be a metaplot episode but it's still fun. If Zoe says "hey, wanna bang", why would you ever say no.

This episode is so unhinged.

S2E39 - Schrodinger's Rocket Launcher

S4E11: If/Then/Else S4E12: Ctrl+Alt+Del

Yet again, Star Trek talk. And then we get a 10 minute tour of Justen's bedroom furniture. IKEA, sponsor us--this podcast resembles one of Jude's bookcases, for sure.

If/Then/Else: It's Remedial Chaos Theory! The show played with the format of broadcast tv to emotionally whiplash you, and it doesn't come across as well on streaming, but that doesn't make this any less of an amazing episode... Shaw's exit(?) was because of real-life things, not conflicts, and was a character choice. Only Fusco seems to be mispredicted by the Machine. Even the Machine knows root is the Queen.

Ctrl+Alt+Del: The difference between the Machine and Samaritan is further explored, including bottom-up and top-down methodologies. Fusco is a hockey man, and is ride or die for Team Machine. We love to hate Control. Bio-informatics defined. Schrodinger's Rocket Launcher.

S2E38 - The Meme Episode

S4E9: The Devil You Know S4E10: Cold War

Zathras warning: LOTS of Star Trek in the beginning of this one. Like, nearly 10 minutes. The management apologizes.

The Devil You Know: The theme of this episode is "who does the protecting, and who do they choose to protect." Where the hell did Shaw hide a P90 in a cosmetics counter? ELIAS! You know a goon is done for when you finally learn his name. Fusco kicks butt. Elias may be a moral monster, but the rest of the Machine Team basically is too.

The Cold War: It's the meme episode! Tweet us your favorite use of the assassin-chain format. There is a specific mayo to mustard ratio. Greer backstory--he was borrowed from a John Le Carre novel and well on his way to becoming a Bond villain. Nice pastebin reference. The war in heaven continues.

S2E37 - Fine, we'll commit your felony

S4E07 Honor among Thieves S4E08 Point of Origin

Jude goes a long way to make a gif. The fundamental warcrimes component of Battletech.

Honor Among Thieves: We hit the warcrimes airhorn a lot. Some of the logistics seem unrealistic here, in a show about godlike AIs. The threat of a pandemic was much more fun when it wasn't a thing we'd actually experienced. Shaw is a bisexual icon. The fundamental differences between The Machine and Samaritan, and the consequences of those differences. Captain Boomerang?! The most eurotrash thief team.

Point of Origin: Bear is SCUBA-certified. The questionable physics of hollywood. The Brotherhood is a kind of an up-and-down antagonist.

S2E36 - It's time we had a talk...

S4E5: Prophets S4E6: Pretenders

Prophets: This episode hits different in 2023. John's sexytimes sad motif means a recurring character, and John is a terrible spy. Samaritan is taking active measures. AIs don't understand morals, in Finch's view. Root is great in this episode. Has John ever voted? No one mock Ana for her bravery in this episode.

Pretenders: John has a fanboy. Elias and Dominic meet. Good nerd-flirting. Surprisingly good vigilante, if unironically wearing a trilby.

S2E35 - Haberdashery and Firearms

S4E3 Wingman S4E4 Brotherhood

Justen hates auto-zoom.

Wingman: Which PoI writer has written the most Fusco F*cks episodes? John isn't allowed to do his favorite things (kneecapping) any more now that he's a cop. Bear is the best boy, yet again. Harold gets to buy an anti-tank weapon. Jude admits he's wrong. Fusco looks good in purple, but why can't they tailor his jacket right? The wingman guy isn't pickup artist 2.0, he's genuinely a nice guy? You forget that Harold isn't a helpless dweeb, but this season reminds you that he's an extremely talented field agent.

Brotherhood: ELIAS! Winston Duke in a guest role. You can gauge how murderous a woman in the PoI universe is by the height of her heels (Control being the exception that proves the rule). We don't enjoy the Brotherhood stuff, and it's also the least fun "kids in danger" episode so far. Poor Bear. There's some wrestling discussion that Zathras sort of started ignoring after a while, sorry.

S2E34 - Ominous Triangles

S4E01: Panopticon S4E02: Nautilus

  • Samaritan got to Jude's audio, sorry.
  • Be prepared for a ranking of all Nolans.
  • The show has shifted from Wealthy Man Procedural to AI Apocalypse.

Panopticon: Shaw is a perfume girl, John is an undercover cop, and Finch is a professor. Ana was close on her predictions with Shaw at least. Elias--welcome back! Root and Finch have switched places motivation-wise and it's delightful. Harold doesn't get a badass revenge montage set to Johnny Cash, just a strangely cushy office for a visiting lecturer.

Nautilus: New digs for the Machine Team! Shaw needs to be a B+ thief at best. Samaritan is running an ARG. The Westworld theory resurfaces. Fusco gets revenge. Google Glass tells you exactly how old this episode is.

S2E33 - Malevolent Soccer Mom

S3E22: A House Divided S3E23: Deus Ex Machina

A House Divided: Five numbers, all relevant... to The Machine. Shaw and John have to work with the O'Terminator. Root has a B-Team? Oh great, Vigilance is running a toooootally fair trial. Seeing Root's whole background thing is really cool. The Greer/Finch dialogue should have won an Emmy. Collier is divisive.

Deus Ex Machina: Four Oh Shit Episode. This is a questionable trial. The GLOMAR defense. Vigilance is... a false flag! Hersh died as he lived, doing his job and being angry at everyone else. Bear's vest! Greer knows he's in a sci-fi spy thriller. Overall this is a heck of a season finale and yet another left turn in the plot of the show.

Next up: The War in Heaven, or: The Age of Samaritan

S2E32 - A Truly Evil UI

s3E20 Death Benefit s3E21 Beta

You know software is evil if it doesn't have Dark mode.

Death Benefit: The Rules Committee does... something, we think? root asks Shaw out on a murder spree--sorry, date. John reverts to his CIA training. AI murder, the sexiest ethical dilemma. No, actually, it's not sexy, it's fascinating to watch Harold finally come to grips with what he's created. "I've sort of gotten used to saving people" is a banger of a line. We discover another cultural k/t boundary.

Beta: Harold's gone missing, Samaritan has evil UI, and the Machine Team is worried. New Jersey is where you go when you want to lay low? The first "cocoa puffs"! This is a VERY tense episode.
